Sleep Testing in the Comfort of Your Own Bed
What Is Home Sleep Testing?
A Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT) is a simplified, portable version of an in-lab sleep study. It allows you to sleep in your own bed while a small, FDA-approved device records key breathing and physiological data overnight.
MWCSD performs 60–90 home sleep tests every week, making us one of the highest-volume HSAT providers in Mid-Michigan. The device is worn for a single night, then returned for interpretation by our board-certified sleep physicians.
All devices are FDA-approved and clinically validated for obstructive sleep apnea screening.
What the Device Measures
Airflow
Nasal cannula measures airflow through the nose and mouth to detect apneas and hypopneas.
Oxygen Saturation
Pulse oximeter on your finger tracks blood oxygen levels throughout the night.
Respiratory Effort
Chest belt sensor monitors breathing effort to differentiate obstructive vs central events.
Heart Rate
Continuous heart rate monitoring detects cardiac irregularities associated with sleep apnea.
Who's a Candidate?
HSAT is ideal for many patients, but some conditions require the more comprehensive in-lab polysomnography.
Good Candidates
- High clinical suspicion for obstructive sleep apnea
- Adults aged 18 and older
- No major cardiopulmonary comorbidities
- No other suspected sleep disorders
May Need In-Lab Study
- Complex or multiple sleep disorders suspected
- Congestive heart failure or COPD
- Neuromuscular disease affecting breathing
- Pediatric patients (under 18)
- Previous inconclusive HSAT results
How It Works
From consultation to follow-up, the HSAT process is simple and streamlined.
Consultation & Prescription
A board-certified sleep physician evaluates your symptoms and determines if HSAT is appropriate for your situation.
Device Picked Up
Your portable sleep monitor is either mailed to your home or picked up at one of our clinic locations.
Sleep One Night with Device
Wear the simple, comfortable device for one full night of sleep in your own bed — no electrodes, no lab.
Return Device
Drop off or mail back the device the next day. All data is stored securely on the unit.
Results in 3–5 Days
A board-certified sleep medicine physician reviews and interprets your study. Results are available within days.
Follow-Up Appointment
Discuss your results, diagnosis, and personalized treatment plan with your sleep physician.
HSAT vs. In-Lab PSG
Both tests are clinically valid — the right choice depends on your symptoms and medical history.
