Comprehensive Sleep Care Comes to Traverse City: Our New State-of-the-Art Sleep Lab Is Open

This September, Mid-West Center for Sleep Disorders opened a new three-bed, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory in Traverse City. After two years of clinic and home-testing service, we can now offer comprehensive sleep care — including full in-lab studies and pediatric sleep studies for children ages 3 and up — close to home. A note to our referring providers across northern Michigan.

Comprehensive Sleep Care Comes to Traverse City: Our New State-of-the-Art Sleep Lab Is Open

This September, Mid-West Center for Sleep Disorders opened a brand-new, three-bed sleep laboratory in Traverse City — completing the picture of sleep care in the region. After two years of serving northern Michigan through our Traverse City clinic and home sleep testing, we can now offer the full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment services locally, for adults and children alike. Dr. Vishal Saini shares what this means for patients and for the referring providers who care for them.

By Dr. Vishal Saini, M.D., FAASM — Research & Medical Director, Mid-West Center for Sleep Disorders

For the last two years, we've been proud to serve the Traverse City community with specialty sleep care — expert consultation in our clinic and convenient home sleep apnea testing for patients across the region. Those services filled a real need, and the response from patients and local providers has been humbling. But we always saw them as the first chapter, not the whole story. Some sleep problems simply cannot be fully diagnosed or managed from home, and until now, those patients faced long drives downstate for the testing they needed.

That changes today. This September, we opened a new, three-bed, state-of-the-art sleep laboratory right here in Traverse City. For the first time, our northern Michigan patients have access to the complete range of sleep medicine services — consultation, home testing, full in-laboratory studies, treatment initiation, and long-term follow-up — without leaving the region. Comprehensive sleep care has arrived in Traverse City, and I want to tell you exactly what that means.

What a Full Sleep Lab Adds That Home Testing Can't

Home sleep apnea testing is a wonderful tool, and we'll keep using it heavily — it's convenient, comfortable, and perfectly suited to a large group of patients with a high likelihood of straightforward obstructive sleep apnea. But a home test is, by design, a limited one. It measures breathing and oxygen, but it cannot stage sleep, because it has no EEG. That means it can't tell us how much deep or REM sleep a patient is getting, can't detect the REM-predominant apnea that an averaged home number so often hides, and can't evaluate the many sleep disorders that have nothing to do with the airway at all.

A fully equipped, attended in-laboratory polysomnogram is a different order of test. With EEG, eye and muscle leads, airflow and effort sensors, oxygen, EKG, leg movement channels, and video — all watched over by a registered sleep technologist through the night — we can do things a home test simply cannot:

  • Stage sleep properly and measure REM and deep (N3) sleep, so we can catch REM-related apnea and other patterns that masquerade as "mild" on a home study.
  • Diagnose the full range of sleep disorders — not just obstructive sleep apnea, but central and complex apnea, narcolepsy and the hypersomnias (with next-day MSLT testing), periodic limb movement disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder and other parasomnias, and nocturnal seizures.
  • Perform attended titrations — dialing in CPAP, and especially the more sophisticated therapies like BiPAP and adaptive servo-ventilation (ASV) that require a technologist and physician to set up safely and correctly.
  • Sort out the complicated cases — the patient whose symptoms don't match their home test, who has heart failure or neurologic disease, or whose therapy isn't working for reasons a home download can't explain.

In other words, the lab lets us take care of the patients who need the most, right here, instead of sending them elsewhere.

Now Serving Children, Too: Pediatric Sleep Studies Ages 3 and Up

I'm especially proud of this one. Our new Traverse City lab is equipped to perform pediatric sleep studies, and we can now evaluate and care for children ages 3 and above with sleep disorders.

Pediatric sleep medicine has long been one of the hardest services for families in northern Michigan to access — it often meant a trip of several hours and an overnight stay far from home with an already anxious child. Childhood sleep problems are common and consequential: obstructive sleep apnea (frequently tied to enlarged tonsils and adenoids), restless sleep, parasomnias like sleepwalking and night terrors, and sleep issues that accompany ADHD, autism, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. Untreated, pediatric sleep-disordered breathing can affect a child's growth, behavior, attention, and school performance — and much of it is very treatable once it's properly diagnosed.

Our lab and team are set up to make a sleep study as comfortable and child-friendly as possible, so families can get answers close to home. For pediatricians and family physicians in the region, this means you now have a local referral option for the child whose snoring, restless nights, or daytime behavior has you wondering about sleep.

A Direct Invitation to Our Referring Providers

To the physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, dentists, and other clinicians across Traverse City, Grand Traverse County, and the surrounding northern Michigan counties: this lab was built for your patients.

You see sleep complaints every day — the fatigued patient with resistant hypertension, the loud snorer whose spouse is worried, the diabetic whose numbers won't behave, the patient with atrial fibrillation or heart failure, the child who can't sit still in school, the shift worker who can't function, the patient on chronic opioids with irregular breathing. Many of these are sleep disorders hiding in plain sight, and many of them need more than a home test to sort out properly.

Here's what referring to us now offers you locally:

  • The full diagnostic toolkit — home testing when it fits, and full in-lab polysomnography, MSLT, and attended PAP/ASV titration when it doesn't — so your patient gets the right test, not just the available one.
  • Adult and pediatric care (ages 3+) under one program, close to home.
  • A board-certified sleep team (I'm a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine) managing the full arc of care — diagnosis, treatment initiation, and ongoing follow-up — with clear communication back to you.
  • Continuity you can count on — we've been in Traverse City for two years, and we're now permanently invested here with our own lab.

Our goal is simple: to keep your patients' sleep care in the region, deliver it at an academic standard, and make referring effortless. We handle the testing, the interpretation, the therapy setup, and the follow-up, and we keep you in the loop every step of the way.

"For two years we've been able to evaluate Traverse City patients and test many of them at home. What we couldn't always do was keep the most complex cases — and the kids — close to home. Now we can. A community this size deserves comprehensive sleep care without a three-hour drive, and that's exactly what we've built." — Dr. Vishal Saini
